funbin & accompanying April Fools paper

apr 2026
links: github paper on arXiv

after seeing a 2D histogram with absurdly out-of-place hexagonal binning, I decided that this should be taken to the exteme. I wrote a simple script to use arbitrary polygons as bins and started producing 2D histograms binned in all sorts of crazy shapes. some example results are below

example distribution binned in various shapes

this also lead to an April Fools paper, available on arXiv, that makes the case for using non-standard binnings, drawing from ancient mysticism, medieval alchemy, and early modern philosopy.
